ABOUT SHEILA JOHNSON

Sheila Johnson Born on January 25th, 1949 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, she grew up with a solid education. Her discipline and tenacity are attributes that were instilled by her parents from a very young age. Her father who was a neurosurgeon and her mother, an accountant, knew and imparted strong work ethics and set a high standard for success. With these principles instilled, Sheila Johnson attended the University of Illinois where she majored in music.

Sheila’s inroad to a career path that led to her phenomenal success was teaching music and working part-time as a violinist. But it wasn’t until she co-founded Black Entertainment Television (BET) with her then-husband Robert Johnson in 1980, that her path to becoming a billionaire opened.

BET was groundbreaking because it was the first cable station appealing specifically to a black audience. BET highlighted Black entertainment at its finest.

Under the leadership of Sheila Johnson as Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Public Relations, the primary focus was on branding and marketing. She expanded the programming to include music videos, comedies, talk shows, and news. The diversification propelled the network’s success and popularity significantly.

BET grew to become one of the most watched stations, as it garnered millions of viewers in record time. As a result of its success, the network became one of the major players in the media industry and Sheila Johnson became the first female African American billionaire. BET’s presentation of the best of the African American community’s artistry, filled the need for self-identity and a reflection of their high achievements.

Sheila Johnson further diversified her business ventures, which served to solidify her status as a billionaire. In 2007 she and her husband Robert Johnson, a billionaire in his own right, founded Salamandar Hospitality LLC, a company with primary holdings in luxury hotels and resorts. Listed among her property holdings is Half Moon in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The brand, which became known for its elegance, hospitality, and panache, attracted high-profile guests and earned accolades for superiority and commitment to customer service.

Sheila Johnson was very passionate about her role in hospitality. She loved to create the ultimate experience for her guests. Her properties like the Salamander Resort and Spa in Middleburg, Virginia, offered exceptional accommodation, and equestrian activities and celebrated the rich history of the region. Sheila Johnson co-founded the Black Entertainment Television Network Education and Athletic Program (BET-MAR), which is geared to providing scholarships for students. She is a co-owner of the Washington Wizards, the Washington Mystics, and the Washington Capitals, making her one of the few African American women with ownership stakes in major sports teams. Her commitment and inclusion in the sports arena have earned her respect and admiration from both fans and fellow team owners.

Sheila’s story is not just about her financial success though, but one of breaking down barriers for future African American entrepreneurs and business leaders.
