BET’S FOUNDER ROBERT JOHNSON – AMERICA’S SECOND BLACK BILLIONAIRE

Early Life and Education:

Robert Johnson was born on April 8, 1946, in Hickory, Mississippi, into a working-class African American family. He attended the University of Illinois, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in social studies education and a Master’s Degree in public affairs. He later pursued a law degree from the School of Law at the University of Virginia.

After completing his education, Johnson worked in government positions, including serving as an aide to Congressman Walter E. Fauntroy. This experience provided him with valuable insights into the world of politics and business.

Founding BET:

In 1979, Robert Johnson co-founded Black Entertainment Television (BET) with a $500,000 investment. The network was created to provide African Americans with a platform for entertainment, news, and cultural content.

BET faced numerous challenges in its early years, including financial struggles and limited distribution. However, Johnson’s persistence and innovative programming gradually attracted a larger audience.

In 2000, Viacom, one of the world’s largest media conglomerates, acquired BET for approximately $3 billion. This acquisition made Robert Johnson the second African American billionaire in the United States.

After the sale of BET, Johnson continued to pursue various entrepreneurial ventures, including investments in real estate, sports teams, and hotel chains.

Robert Johnson is known for his philanthropic efforts, including donations to educational institutions and initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for African Americans.
