Sheila Johnson Born on January 25th, 1949 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, she grew up with a solid education. Her discipline and tenacity are attributes that were instilled by her parents from a very young age. Her father who was a neurosurgeon and her mother, an accountant, knew and imparted strong work ethics and set a high standard for success. With these principles instilled, Sheila Johnson attended the University of Illinois where she majored in music.

She expanded the programming to include music videos, comedies, talk shows, and news. The diversification propelled the network’s success and popularity significantly.

As a result of its success, the network became one of the major players in the media industry and Sheila Johnson became the first female African American billionaire. BET’s presentation of the best of the African American community’s artistry, filled the need for self-identity and a reflection of their high achievements.
